Primitive man was the first engineer – a civil engineer. Civil engineering began to take form when he thought of his shelter. Since then, Civil Engineering has grown at a wider and slower pace. Civil Engineering being the pioneer in engineering arena is one of the broadest of engineering disciplines, extending across many technical specialties. Civil engineering is the backbone of modern world and plays a vital role in the development of infrastructures, offshore structures, transportation, wastewater treatment, launching facilities, etc. Civil engineers work in diversified areas such as structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, construction engineering, environmental engineering, water resources and hydraulic engineering, ocean and coastal engineering.

One cannot deny the fact that, there was a backlog in this significant field of engineering. With the rapid economic boom in our country and all around the world, civil engineering is now gaining scope and fame. Both government and private sectors are in dire need of civil engineers for the upcoming projects (Highways, Power projects, industries, etc.)

Government sectors like PWD, Highways department, etc. are in need of Civil engineers for executing their flyover projects, World Bank sponsored projects and many more.

Renowned companies like L&T, Gammon India Ltd., Simplex, Leighton International etc., recruit civil engineers for planning, designing and executing their projects in U.S., U.K., Australia, Dubai and many more developed countries. Civil engineers will always be needed to maintain and repair existing facilities and structures and to construct new ones. Even I.T. companies like Wipro, TCS, etc require civil engineers for maintenance purposes.

Viewing Civil Engineering prospects with a different perspective, one can indulge in research activities and teaching as well. A Civil engineer of good caliber can even open his own independent consultancy services. It is one of the branches of engineering which supports self-employment.

In a nutshell, the discipline of Civil engineering is expected to unfold into a dynamic and multi-faceted industry, ruled by innovations and opportunities.
