Velammal Engineering College (VEC) was founded by Shri. M.V. Muthuramalingam, a Professional Engineer. Located in the northern bank of Puzhal lake, this college is one among the few Engineering Colleges located very near the city. The College belongs to the Velammal Educational Trust, a registered non-minority service organization, established in the year 1986.

The trust which proved its mettle in School Education, entered the field of Technical Education in 1995 - 96, by starting two institutions - Velammal Engineering College (VEC) and Velammal College of Management and Computer Studies (VCMCS). From the academic year 2007 - 2008, the trust has established another technical institute, Velammal College of Engineering and Technology (VCET) at Madurai, Tamilnadu. The Trust is presently imparting quality education to more than 35,000 students every year through its 11 institutions.

VEC is approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. It is an ISO 9001:2000 certified institution and is also accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA). VEC is ranked within top five institutions consistently among the Engineering colleges in Tamilnadu, which are affiliated to Anna University. VEC is recognized as a nodal center by reputed research organizations such as DST. Presently, VEC offers 7 Under Graduate programmes and 8 Post-Graduate Programmes in various branches of Engineering and Technology.

The Department of English focuses its attention on the needs of future engineers by imparting Technical English, Business English & Communicative English. Apart from this, the Department trains students for Business English Certificate Examination (BEC) conducted by British Council and Certificates are awarded by Cambridge University, London.

The Department is well equipped with State-of-the Art language Laboratory, which is unique in feature. This lab plays a vital role in improving students' communicative skills like listening, speaking and pronunciation.
